Catself
Catself is remembered by her audiences for her unusual but catchy melodies, poetic and clever lyrics and the fairytale atmosphere she creates. Her songs move both between genres and between moods and themes. Next to fairytale elements, Catself's biggest inspiration is the natural world with all its perfect creatures, plants and falling asteroids.
After years of playing for herself and then sometimes at friends' parties and in pubs during her travels, Catself decided to focus on music full time in 2008, during her nature guide internship in Svalbard. Trying to understand why she was such a distracted dog handler, she realised it was because he was making music in her head the whole time and that it was something she could not stop. Upon her return to Finland, Catself disappeared into her home studio, sometimes recording folky tunes and other times playing with sounds and creating colourful arrangements. She recorded those first songs mainly for herself, to experiment and learn - and was surprised when her second ever demo, Alien Vampiress Is Fitting In, was featured on BBC Introducing with Tom Robinson and in other radio programmes, and when she got invited to The Sun Festival, a youth festival in Marrakech, Morocco - still the most exotic gig she has ever played - after the organisers came upon her songs on MySpace.
Catself started reaching an international audience while raising funds for her debut album online on SellaBand, a fanfunding website for musicians. In 2011, as the first Finland-based artist, she completed her 40 000 € budget, thanks to the help of over 800 international fans, who, intrigued and enchanted by her songs, preordered her debut.
Catself lives in Finland but regularly performs around Europe. She tours the most in The Netherlands, where a lot of her album funders come from; she has also performed in Germany, Poland and the UK. During her second UK tour in spring 2015, she performed at The Great Escape in Brighton (see past shows here).
Catself's debut album, co-arranged and accompanied by iconic Polish folk band Saint Nicholas Orchestra, was recorded and mixed by Tadeusz Mieczkowski in Preisner Studio and will be released next year.
