The Refusers
Belkin, a former Wall Street wizard turned whistleblower and one time L.A. studio guitarist, experienced the B.S. he now writes about firsthand. He escaped with his soul intact and lives the ethos he learned at UC Berkeley where he learned to Question The Status Quo, UC Berkeley Haas School’s #1 defining principle. His lyrics expose the dirty dealings at the pinnacles of power.
Joining Belkin on his musical mission are Steve Newton (bass) Joe Doria (rock organ master) and contributing drummer Brendan Hill (Blues Traveler). Wake Up America is a surgical strike against dumbed-down establishment music.
About the Album: With the release of their searing, socially conscious 15-track manifesto “Wake Up America” singer-songwriter Michael Belkin and his eclectic, high energy Seattle based band The Refusers declare war on dumb music.
Serving as the band’s mission statement, “Born to Rock” unleashes a clarion call to “speak truth to power.” Title track “Wake Up America” is a classic rock anthem, probing “illusion vs. truth, where money buys the government, media twists the news, lawyers destroy justice, doctors destroy health and lobbyists steal democracy.”
“Who Is The World For?” sheds light on the stark wealth inequality between the 1% and the working poor, while “American Dream” laments the fact that immigrants and college graduates alike are struggling as their dream becomes a “Ponzi scheme.” “U R What U Eat” tackles the alarming obesity epidemic, while Big Pharma Pimp hilariously and bitingly criticizes our pathetic over-dependence on prescribed drugs.
Belkin jabs Wall Street fat cats and the Federal Reserve on “Bubble People,” then on “2 Big 2 Fail” knocks the fact that banks and corporations get bailed out while the 99% struggle to survive. “Shop Until You Drop” finds him shaking his head at mass overconsumption and our foolish belief that having more stuff is some sort of panacea for our problems. “Hang The Bankers” speaks to the core of The Refusers’ populist message. The pendulum is swinging against obscene greed and Belkin’s song Backlash says ‘the world is run by sociopaths, there’s gonna be a backlash.’ The Refusers are on a mission to wake Americans up to a future free of the corrupting influence of Wall Street, Big Media and Big Pharma.
Joining Belkin on his musical mission are Steve Newton (bass) Joe Doria (rock organ master) and contributing drummer Brendan Hill (Blues Traveler). Wake Up America is a surgical strike against dumbed-down establishment music.
