Artist's Biography
Ian
Strung is a songwriter, indie artist, encyclopedic music historian and
syndicated radio host based in Ontario, Canada.
Post-pandemic, Toronto rock music lifer Ian Strung came back onto the scene
as a radio host. The P.O. Box Radio Show with Postman Dan is syndicated to
markets across Canada and is heard around the world. Ian hosts the “Cancon
Classics” spot, where every week a guest artist covers a Canadian song. The
spot has been going for four years, getting the wider Canadian music scene
in on the fun. But back in 2022 when it started, Ian was recording the songs
himself. Those 18 tracks debuted on the air and were introduced by the
original artists, who all gave enthusiastic praise for Ian’s interpretations
(including Barenaked Ladies, Prozzak, Sloan, By Divine Right, and Klaatu,
among others). This was Gran Fenwick’s “Cancon Classics” album, a passionate
tribute to Canada’s rich alternative rock history.
A year after its release, “Sucks To Be You” featuring Morgan Thompson-Reid
topped the New Music Top 40 for four weeks on Peterborough, Ontario’s Pet
Rock Radio. The song also charted in the top 10 on Only Rock Radio in Spain
for five weeks.
Ian’s next move was to reinterpret Dan Hick’s song about Peterborough’s
lookout (and makeout) point, “Armour Hill.” A duet with Neon Bloom’s Jen
Simpson, Gran Fenwick’s version is a full colour painting to the original’s
beautiful line drawing. While waiting for the track to be completed, Gran
Fenwick issued “Forever,” a cover of lesser known North Bay artist Jess
Roveda. This enabled him to come back to life musically and log some
experience on camera in preparation for the “Armour Hill” video. “Forever”
went
top 20 on Only Rock Radio for six weeks, even longer than “Sucks To Be You.”
The video and single for “Armour Hill” have been a success. More than ever
before, Gran Fenwick is being played worldwide, in places like the U.S.,
Sweden, Australia, Austria, the UK and Ireland. Ian even did a live
interview on a South African college radio station. At Pet Rock Radio in
Peterborough where Armour Hill is really situated, the song has made it to
#2 on the New Music Top 40 right now in January 2026 after 18 weeks on the
chart and was #61 on their year-end list for 2025. The video clip, starring
Shorty Bryenton of Toronto’s Super Not Okay as the alien, is an ambitious
step forward from “Forever” and serves as Gran Fenwick’s first classic music
video
