Katherine
Aly is an avant-pop singer/songwriter based in Edinburgh. A blend of London
Grammar, Björk and Florence and the Machine references, her genre-fluid,
melody-driven tracks are an ethereal experimentation with lyrical elements
and dreamy ambience; a narrative of subjectivity in singular and collective
contexts.
Originally from Greece, Katherine has been involved with many musical and
art projects in Scotland's capital; she is the lead singer of shoegaze band,
Lilac Melt and has done various collaborations with UK-based music artists,
including Baby Taylah, Glassmasterer, False Bliss and Midi Paul, being
featured at The Skinny and BBC Radio Scotland and performing at great events
like Tenement Trail, Hidden Door Festival and EH6 Festival.
In Spring 2019, Katherine did and impressive live acoustic show at CamGlen
Radio in Glasgow and got booked to play in London, a show that received
excellent response, leading up to the release party of her debut single ‘The
Skin I’m Made Of’, at the Mash House in Edinburgh on 17 May by Infinite
Hive. After their successful show in London, legendary Scottish band,
Goodbye Mr Mackenzie invited Katherine to also play in what became a
sold-out concert Aberdeen at the Lemon Tree later in May.
In summer 2019 Katherine played at Kelburn Festival, did a Fringe Festival
show, got invited to play for the Rhythm exhibition at the Open Eye Art
Gallery and she also supported anthemic pop artist, Onr. In the meantime,
Katherine enriched her live acts with the addition of a mesmerising visual
show curated by Sean Mallon (VanIves, Groove Armanda), taking imagery from
the artworks she designed and adding projections themed by her aesthetic as
an artist.
Her 2nd single, Sunny Days - officially released on 17 August - was
premiered along with a music video by Stuart Breadner (Seafret, La
Fontaines) on The Scotsman, where Katherine was featured as Artist of the
Week. She also gained airplay on Amazing Radio, BBC Radio nan Gaidheal and
Radio-WIGWAM amongst others, got featured in various blogs and did
interviews with The Fountain and You Haven’t Heard This Music Podcast, where
she was re-invited as special guest.
In autumn 2019 Katherine played a sold-out show at The Voodoo Rooms
Edinburgh alongside The Filthy Tongues and went back at Chamber Studio to
continue working towards completing her first album with producer Graeme
Young (Melisa Kelly, Meursault). In Sunny Days’ aftermath she got invited to
do her first headline show in London at the historic The Dublin Castle,
Camden as well as the 432 Presents showcase, First Footing in Glasgow.
''Excellent'' - The Scotsman for Sunny Days // Artist of the Week (4 Aug 19)
by Association of Independent Music & Born to Be Wide.
''dynamic, unique and unpredictable...spine-tingling'' Demerara Records
''Katherine Aly has a keen sense of the theatrical and she uses that to make
her song “Sunny Days” stand out from the crowd and, with dramatic intent
layered over her acidic lyrics, her appeal to musical cognoscenti must
surely grow.'' - Bluesbunny ''dreamy vocals conveyed in a heavenly manner''
- Indie Band Guru ''beautifully distinctive voice, crisp and clear with no
warbling affectations and the song reaches the parts other vocalists can’t
reach'' - Thegingerquiff
