Artist's Biography
Alt-rock
outfit Lunar & The Deception released their debut album, The Somnambulist,
alongside their lead single ‘Ezeru Kazpam’ on March 6, 2026, via X-Ray
Sound. The album arrives in the wake of the glowing success of their single
‘Your Monsters’, which premiered on leading female-led publication LOCK
Magazine and garnered early support from Dutch publication Nieuweplaat.
Co-produced by the band and Michael Rendall, known for his work with The
Orb, Peter Murphy, and Killing Joke, the album follows a series of
high-profile live performances which include supporting Pussy Riot at
Glastonbury Festival, performing at London venues, and participating in the
2022 Sync Summit Music Conference. The band has been named Artist of the
Week by Richer Sounds and received a 9/10 review from Powerplay Magazine,
further establishing their presence in indie rock, dream pop, and
neo-psychedelia.
With roots in Durban and Nelspruit, South Africa, Lunar & The Deception is
led by vocalist Britt Xyra Dusk, a singer-songwriter with a history in
professional costume design. Known for her activism and dynamic stage
presence, Britt also creates the band's visuals, drawing on themes of
ancient deities, prophetic sorcerers, and tribal warriors. Percussionist
Hedge Seel, raised in Oxfordshire, developed his rhythmic style through
travels in Southeast Asia and India. The group features dub producer Thomas
Hammond and sound engineer Greg Chapter. Their sound blends alt-rock, indie
rock, darkwave, dream pop, gothic, and neo-psychedelia, drawing inspiration
from artists such as Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Tool, and Evanescence,
resulting in a sound reminiscent of Portishead and Esben & The Witch.
About the Album
Lunar & The Deception delivers a sonic feast in The Somnambulist, eluding
the confines of a single genre and instead journeying through an odyssey of
sonics bathed in emotion. The album is led by the searing ‘Ezeru Kazpam’, a
track that feels like a war cry as much as it is an anthem. The track opens
with a dialogue emphasising how money has taken center stage over everything
else in this world, set to gentle piano notes, before Britt's haunting
vocals come in. The percussion and an insistent guitar riff build
momentum, expanding the arrangement's scope and quickening the song's pace
until it detonates into a volley of shoegazey guitars. As the song
progresses, Lunar & The Deception quietly remove backing elements until
we're back to where we started, with that piano motif and ghostly vocals - a
perfect exemplification of the album in its entirety.
