Artist's Biography
One
Week Later (OWL ) is the genre-bending, innovative duo Richard M Smith and
Jane S Broughton. Rich composes, arranges and plays all the music for
guitars and synths. Jane writes the melodies and lyrics and performs the
vocals. Rich also does some backing vocals.
OWL has a variety of albums and EPs out on general release, including:-
Revolving Door EP 2013, Songs From Mars 2016, Connected 2018, Things That
Make No Sense EP 2018,The Art Of Owl, 2020, Eclectica 2022, REFLECT EP
February 2023 and the latest release, REALITY? EP Feb 2025.
They are currently working on an acoustic project and will be back in the
recording studio at the end of April 2025 to record their first acoustic
single called MOMENTS!
OWL is influenced by such artists as Blondie, Future Islands, Fleetwood Mac
and Chrissie Hynde, not to mention the topical success of “new acoustic
artists”, such as Miles Smith, but remain totally original in writing,
arranging and performing all their own material whilst pervading the art
rock/art pop world. They constantly seek out and listen to new music and
examine current trends to perfect their sound for the here and now but stay
true to their creative roots. Their songs are essentially alternative
pop/rock, art pop/rock, combining both traditional instruments and
electronics.
OWL has featured on the radio show “BBC Introducing” and OWL is frequently
played and supported by a variety of internet radio stations, including
Radio Wigwam, Amazing Radio, Broadjam, Banks Radio, BuzBeats Radio, Only
Rock Radio, Loneley Oak Radio and a couple of US stations, namely Good Music
Radio and CBJ Radio.
Whilst OWL is at its core an eclectic electric duo, they are successfully
crossing over into the acoustic genre too. “ We felt slightly excluded from
smaller, more intimate settings, and we wanted to experiment with an
exceptional acoustic/electro sound. We’re being our usual experimental
selves, but we know we’re on the right track! Our passion and drive is on
the electric side though, and this will never be taken over by ACOUSTIC
OWL!!!
OWL’S philosophy? ALL genres of music are important! It’s vital to develop
an enquiring curiosity into all current music trends, whilst appreciating
the exceptional wealth of former musical influences, which will always play
a significant role in shaping the here and now, and help artists understand
how to move forward with their “sound and vision”.
“Music is self-defining and we will strive to ensure that our recent and
tender but harrowing experiences reflect our sensitised sentiments.
Life-changing happenings will always have the upper hand!”
About the Album
For both of us, the last two years have been emotionally catastrophic. For
Richard in particular in 2023 and 2024, many months were spent on hospital
visits before his dearly loved son passed away at only 34 years of age, due
to a particularly aggressive cancer. Indeed, it’s devastating for any parent
to have to lose a child and it is most certainly the most impossible thing
to accept.
I had experienced family loss too with both my parents passing, although
they had lived long and happy lives. It was an unexpected blow however to
lose my younger brother to cancer following an operation which didn’t go to
plan.
We’ve been on a melancholy and highly emotional journey ever since and we’ve
had the desire to create new songs to try and placate our inner emotional
turmoil. Nothing can however fill that enormous gap in your heart and soul,
but maybe it helps just a little?
Creatively we’re always looking for new challenges and we’re ever eager to
move forward musically with changes in genre, style and mood but we didn’t
want our new songs to be emotional copies of how we were feeling. We simply
wanted to focus on life and the challenges thrown up by circumstantial
changes.

Stuck In The Middle With You
Artist's Biography
We’re
submitting a cover song! It’s nothing we’ve ever done before and we don’t
think we’re likely to repeat this process. Everyone was constantly asking us
to do a cover number, so we chose this Gerry Rafferty/ Stealers Wheel
classic, STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU and tried our best to make it our own,
with a little help from some musician friends of ours.
We have the wonderful Nick Pentelow ( Wizard , Elton John, Beach Boys ) on
sax, The amazing Abby Brant ( The Move, Mumbo-Jumbo, Quill, Stevie Winwood)
on keys. The affable Alan Caves ( sound engineer to Roy Wood, Quill, Bev
Bevan UB40, amongst others ) on bass and we’ve also got the superb Sharon
Gibbons and the magnificent Michelle Farmer on backing vocals.
Then there’s us of course, Namely One Week Later, with the brilliantly
gorgeous and talented Richard Smith on guitars, Perky Dudley on drums and
percussion and me, Jane Broughton on lead vocals.
