Artist's Biography

Big Stir Records is proud to welcome longtime friends THE GOLD NEEDLES to our official roster. Hailing from Mick Ronson’s hometown of Kingston Upon Hull, England, The Gold Needles formed in 2015 and have cut an impressive swath through the British indie guitar pop scene ever since, building momentum that shows no sign of stopping. The band comprises:

Simon Dowson - Lead vocals, rhythm guitar
Dave Burbage - Lead and rhythm guitars
Mark English - Keyboards, backing vocals
Carl Slaughter - Bass guitar, harmony vocals
Will Jones - Drums

They've have released three albums – the most recent being 2021's critically acclaimed WHAT'S TOMORROW EVER DONE FOR YOU? - and two highly collectible standalone singles on vinyl. They have also contributed tracks to a number of tribute compilations. As 2025 closes, the Needles re-emerge, now part of the international stable of pop-rock heroes at Big Stir Records in California, with the new album MOOD ELEVATOR marking a new and exciting chapter in the band’s story. It's been teased with hit indie singles for nearly a year, starting in 2024 with “I Don't Know About That” and continuing through this year's “Supernature” and “Turns To Gold." The band also contributed a key track to Big Stir's acclaimed Halloween LP Chilling, Thrilling Hooks and Haunted Harmonies, and the new single “Crescent Moon” heralds the album's December 12 release.

Their sound has been described as ‘Psych Beat’ with influences coming from The Beatles, The Cars, The Motors and many more. The band love melody and harmony, and critical reaction to their whole catalog demonstrates just how effective they are at orchestrating all the elements crucial to the indie pop sound. The Gold Needles have been played extensively on Sirius XM (including Bill Kelly, Chris Carter and Michael des Barres) as well as on the BBC in the U.K. and on local and national stations globally.

The band has also developed a widely-admired live set and has performed multiple times at Liverpool's legendary Cavern Club and at the 15th Dream of Dr Sardonicus Festival in Wales.
Prestigious support slots have put them in front of audiences arriving for The Darling Buds, Duncan Reid and The Big Heads, The Monochrome Set and EXTC, garnering new and ardent fans of their own in the process. Early notices for MOOD ELEVATOR are already calling it the finest work yet from THE GOLD NEEDLES, and the band can’t wait to get cracking. We at Big Stir Records are thrilled to be along for the ride.
