Blackout Orchestra

Featured Artist of October 20, 2024
with the album: "The End Of The World"

Artist's Biography

Canadian rising star of the indie songwriter scene Ben VanBuskirk, A.K.A Blackout Orchestra, describes their music as “for long walks, dark nights of the soul and underwear dancing in your bedroom”. New LP The End of the World, November 1st) somehow manages all 3 simultaneously! Though dancing through streets in your underwear is not recommended, especially during these chilly seasons…

The story arc of the band is laced with contradiction, tragedy and irony. A break up leading to a break down led to the creation of their debut album I Will Want You When We Are Ghosts, the making of which saw new love blossom and led to the darkly romantic sophomore album Beauty Sleep. This new partnership ended just ahead of a gruelling year of promoting and singing love songs about a lover now suddenly departed.

This would be enough to send most people off the deep end, but Ben instead plunged deep into ‘the work’ - quickly retooling his live set to suit being solo, jetting to the UK to play gigs, festival & instores and collaborate with & meet artists on his indie label Quickfix Recordings for the first time - all the while writing about the whole transitional process period for this new record which would be titled "The End Of The World’ (what else?!).

"Of course it hurt like hell, but it was incredibly freeing. I could do anything - I was on my own in the world, taking in amazing live music, jumping on a plane and playing in the UK, studying absurdism and Buddhism, just throwing myself into life alone - I wanted to capture that 'anything could happen' feeling in the songs" - Ben VanBuskirk

The result is his most consistent yet diverse set of songs to date - showing a great control of dynamics and emotions and an explorative, curious nature to his writing. Time to get ready for the end of the world - now you have the perfect soundtrack.
