LE
BRUIT: Contemporary "Rock Atmospherique" with a Striking Edge
LE BRUIT, French for “the noise,” is a band that captures the raw beauty of
duality. Fronted by songwriters Tom Allen and Johanna Serville, their male
and female voices weave haunting harmonies over baritone guitar, driven by
Morgan Arnault’s dreamy, atmospheric drums.
'For fans of Interpol Mogwai & the National' LE BRUIT blends the poetic
intensity of Leonard Cohen, PJ Harvey, and Nick Cave with the sonic
landscapes of shoegaze, post-rock, and stoner rock to create their sound:
Rock Atmospherique. - dark, textured, and unforgettable.
The band’s beginnings are as compelling as their sound. Tom and Johanna met
at a concert in a Lyon squat, they shared blue Stratocaster and a magnetic
connection which sparked what would become LE BRUIT. Morgan competed the
line up which is set to tour in 2025, in support of the EP. Tom, the
left-handed Englishman from Sheffield who plays his guitar magnificently
backwards, has received the realist poetry of Cohen and Dylan as part of his
heritage, without betraying his favourite 90s Brit rock anthems. At
university, he is a DJ at Sheffield's famous Leadmill, where he churned out
rock, R&B and disco hits like no other. His post rock band Corleone
attracted attention and filled the local clubs. Legend has it that the
future 65 Days of Static and Arctic Monkeys were devouring them with their
eyes! The Corleone adventure came to an abrupt end, despite a tour with
Explosion in the Sky and support slots for The Libertines...‘Have van, will
travel’ Tom left everything behind and headed east, where his destiny
awaited him. ‘With the low winter sun behind, my shadow leads east...’
Johanna grew up in the macho, delinquent environment of Avignon's estates,
learning to speak very badly and to smoke at the age of 12. She stole her
imprisoned older brother's vinyl records and got her first shock: Janis
Joplin. When she discovered PJ Harvey and Nirvana, she took up the guitar to
shout over chords. She met a bunch of very talented and well-behaved
musicians at a music school in the south of France, who, as well as
channelling her dirty mouth, inspired her to write her own songs. She came
back from London after 5 years, heartbroken, and wrote the album Storm for
her duo Jesus is my girlfriend. The duo received interest from a number of
SMACs, webzines and local radio stations, but none of this was enough to
fill the fridge. Small jobs and dashed hopes eventually got the better of
them. After a rather disastrous trial period as an administrative executive,
she rediscovered her raison d'être and the desire to perform. She joined her
old friend Ritchie Buzz (Les Sheriff) in TheDustburds for the shows, and
co-wrote several tracks on their forthcoming album (use your vacation
vol.2).One house in the forest and a little girl later, Le Bruit is alive!
Cradled by both the Britpop wave of the 90s and the emergence of the grunge
sound of the same period, Morgan joined the bands Semtazone and then Gran
Kino, who between them released 4 albums and toured for over 15 years in
France, then Europe and beyond. He then moved on to the inspired, eclectic
atmospheric rock of Le Bruit.
“Idle Hands” is a song about setting out with the sun behind you and the
shadow of who you are leading the way. Leaving behind and losing more than
you’ll ever have to find more than you’ll ever need.
Danielle Perry made it her ‘self released song of the month’ on Absolute
Radio in the UK November 2024, which prompted the band to release it to
steaming platforms the day before the first play. She says “really, really
loves it” and will be playing the song all month. “There’s mystique about
this… it’s brand new. Beautiful songwriting and atmosphere.”
LE BRUIT have recorded their first EP with Jean Lamoot (Bashung, Noir
Désir...) Mako Blais (Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin …) and Charles Rowel
(Crocodiles).
