The Black River Chronicles
Artist's Biography
Hi,
I am Lloyd James Fay and I’m a Glasgow based musician rooted in the classic
singersongwriter style from the 60s and 70s with some alternative rock
leanings. I’m influenced by the likes of Neil Young and James Taylor but
also those who have added their own twist via the alt-rock of the 90s and
beyond such as Father John Misty, Malcolm Middleton and Beck.
I released 5 EPs with my previous band Thula Borah enjoying positive
coverage in the likes of Stereogum.
Since the dissolution of Thula Borah in 2019 I am now focussing on
performing solo.
In April 2013 I released my debut album The Black River Chronicles, an
introspective reflection on formative years, childhood stories and forlorn
first love in suburban Lanarkshire’s creaking post-steelindustry suburbs on
independent label Platform Records, which was recorded at Gargleblast
studios with renowned producer/engineer Andy Miller (Mogwai, Arab Strap, De
Rosa).
I have since performed solo at Celtic Connections, Spree, Live@Troon,
Perthshire Amber and MugStock amongst other festivals. And my music has
featured on Hollyoaks, BBC and Amazing Radio. I have headlined Nice N Sleazy
and played at renowned venues such as King Tuts.
In May 2020 I released the EP Fake Depth on Kill Jester Records, funded by
Creative Scotland. Recorded once again with Andy Miller it is a rumination
on modern technology, internet culture and these strange, divisive times. In
some ways a personal documentation of my journey from internet utopian to
dystopian.
About the Album
• My album is called ‘The Black River Chronicles’ and it was recorded at
Gargleblast Studios in Hamilton
with renowned engineer/producer Andy Miller who has worked with Scottish
luminaries such as Mogwai,
Arab Strap, De Rosa, Martin John Henry
• My influences include Mark Kozelek, James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel
• The music was recorded entirely by myself with the only other
contributions coming from Andy Miller on
vocal harmonies
• The album is a reference to the location of a book and documentary about
strange goings on in an
American city, Black River Falls, at the end of the 19th Century

About the Album
From my EPK: Opening with Idiocracy, Fay’s tender and evocative vocal is
able to soar instantly. Gentle guitar strums are paired with pulsating drum
beats, setting the tone perfectly for this intimate, lo-fi rock release.
